What is Sufism?
The Reality of Sufism
In Sufism, the essence is to adhere strictly to Islamic Shariah. Sufism is the spiritual dimension of Islam, aimed at attaining closeness to Allah and reaching a state of spiritual purity and cleansing. However, this goal can only be achieved by strictly following the commandments of Islamic Shariah.
Shariah is the legal and legislative framework that organizes a Muslim’s life in practical and worship aspects. It encompasses matters related to beliefs, worship, transactions, and ethics. Therefore, Sufism, which seeks to achieve the station of Ihsan (spiritual excellence), requires the disciple (mureed) to follow Shariah in every detail of daily life.
The journey toward Allah in Sufism begins with adherence to Shariah. The disciple then progresses towards the stations of sincerity and purity of intention, engages in the practice of dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and inner worship, but without deviating from the teachings of Shariah. Without Shariah, Sufism becomes mere ideas or baseless practices with no connection to the true Islamic foundation.

There is more happiness in giving than in receiving
- Surah Al-Insan (76:8-9):
- “And they give food, despite their love for it, to the poor, the orphan, and the captive.”
- This verse highlights the virtue of feeding others out of love for Allah, especially those who are needy.
- Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177):
- “Righteousness is not that you turn your faces towards the east or the west, but righteousness is in one who…gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler…”
- This verse defines righteousness, including the act of giving food and wealth to those in need as a core aspect of faith.
- Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177):
Feeding Allah’s creation is emphasized in both the Qur’an and Hadith as an important act of worship and humanity.
Sahih Bukhari:
- Abdullah
bin Amr bin Aas (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:
“He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while the neighbor to his side goes hungry.” - This Hadith stresses the importance of caring for one’s neighbors and ensuring they are not hungry.
These
references demonstrate that feeding others, especially the needy, is a
significant act of kindness and a means of earning reward in Islam.
